There are times when we just want a bit of a lift. Or we want to feel happy and social but without feeling like our brain is all fuzzy. If that’s you, let me introduce you to one of my favorite herbs for boosting mood: kava kava.
Kava kava is a plant that is native to the South Pacific, and it has been used for centuries for its relaxing and mood-boosting properties. Kava kava contains kavalactones, which are compounds that have been shown to have anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and sedative effects. You know that feeling you get, more social and uplifted, when you are about half way through a glass of wine or beer? That’s how people describe kava kava and it’s why some people use it as an alcohol replacement.
There have been several studies that have shown that kava kava can be effective in reducing anxiety and improving mood. One study found that kava kava was as effective as a low dose of the anti-anxiety medication, diazepam, in reducing anxiety. Another study found that kava kava was effective in improving mood in people with mild to moderate depression.
There are different types of kava kava, but the one we carry is Vanuatu Borongoro. It comes in a powder and you mix it in a hot beverage like coffee or hot chocolate. You can also sprinkle it on yogurt, add it to soup or a smoothie.
If you’re looking for a natural way to boost your mood, I encourage you to give kava kava a try. It’s a safe and effective herb that can help you feel better.
Kava kava is generally safe for most people to use, but it’s important to talk to your doctor before taking it if you have any underlying health conditions. It’s also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
